The delicious details

The Old Soul brings Afro-Surinamese culinary heritage to Amsterdam through a fully plant-based lens. Founded in March 2022 by Diana Gambier, who moved from Surinam to the Netherlands 35 years ago, the restaurant reimagines Creole classics like pom, moksi alesi, and heri heri without animal products or refined sugar.

The intimate canal-side space on Hobbemakade in Oud-Zuid reflects Gambier's conviction that shared meals create connection across backgrounds. Dishes such as jackfruit bakkeljauw with nori and oyster mushrooms, and roti with masala potato, pumpkin, and chickpeas show the kitchen's inventive approach to plant-based reinvention of traditional Surinamese flavours.

Menu

What is on the table

A fully plant-based Afro-Surinamese kitchen reimagining Creole classics like pom, moksi alesi, and heri heri with plant proteins, whole ingredients, and no refined sugar. Gluten-free options are available across the menu, with vegan pastries from the kitchen's sister bakery, Majesteit Taart.

The kitchen centres entirely on Afro-Surinamese plant-based cooking. Core dishes draw from Creole tradition: pom (a baked dish of pomtajer root vegetable), moksi alesi (mixed rice with beans and lupine), heri heri (cassava, plantain, and sweet potato in spiced coconut oil), and pepre watra. Plant proteins such as tempeh, seitan, jackfruit, and oyster mushrooms replace meat throughout, while cassava, quinoa, and okra appear across starters and mains.

The kitchen works without refined sugar, using substitute ingredients across the full menu including desserts such as bojo (cassava cake), corn porridge, and coconut pudding. Dishes are built around whole plant ingredients with homemade sauces and spiced preparations.

Gluten-free options are available across the menu, with several main dishes (including heri heri, okra with tofu, and oyster mushroom batjaw) marked GF. Vegan pastries come from Majesteit Taart, the bakery on Javastraat run by Diana Gambier's daughter. A dedicated gluten-free high tea is also offered.
