The delicious details

Bar Centraal is a natural wine bar and bistro on Ten Katestraat, at the edge of the Ten Katemarkt in Amsterdam's Oud-West. Born from the same team behind GlouGlou in De Pijp, it pairs a thoughtfully assembled list of low-intervention wines with a compact menu of fusion sharing plates that changes every week.

The kitchen, led by chef Tim Suter, works with seasonal produce to build dishes that shift between European and Asian registers: think burrata with Sichuan pepper, North Sea cod with miso and orange, or confit jerusalem artichoke. Gault&Millau recognised the cooking with 13.5 points and two toques.

The space is candlelit and relaxed, with a covered terrace that catches the afternoon sun on Ten Katestraat. Service is knowledgeable and unhurried, geared towards guests who want to settle in for a few hours.

Menu

What is on the table

The kitchen builds a short menu of sharing plates rotating weekly, drawing on European and Asian culinary traditions. Dishes range from roasted leek with romesco to guinea fowl with mushrooms, with vegetables given equal billing alongside fish and meat. The wine list centres on natural, low-intervention bottles from independent European producers including Julie Balagny, Yvon Metras, and Thomas Popy.

North Sea cod, squid and octopus feature alongside burrata, confit jerusalem artichoke and shaved vegetable plates.

Vegetarian options are a consistent part of the menu, though the offering is not exclusively plant-based. The wine list centres on natural, low-intervention bottles from independent European producers, with names like Julie Balagny, Yvon Metras and Thomas Popy.
